Actually, I have turned OFF ALL the ringers on ALL our phones. When a call comes in, and I hear the machine responding, I look at the Caller ID. If I know the party, I answer, if not, the machine will do it's duty. If the person doesn't leave a message, then why did they call in the first place? The Caller ID and Answering Machine are the modern-day equivalent of the BUTLER. In the olden days, when someone "called" (at the door, of course), the butler would "screen" the callers. Those he knew were welcome, were invited into the parlor to wait for the person to come down. If the person were UNKNOWN, the butler asked who they were, asked for a card, or whatever, and asked the person to wait to see if the "lady of the house" was available. If the person was UNWELCOME, the butler would simply advise, "I'm sorry, but the Lady of the House is unavailable. Would you like me to give her a message?" SEE???? Perfectly PROPER, and perfectly NORMAL! Have a Seasoned day.

I check caller id first. If it's a telemarketer I let the answering machine get it.

Always caller ID. There are too many people I don't want to talk to. This is no longer the stone ages; let's take advantage of it!
