The fact that Hoover did very little to help the people that were suffering from the Great Depression.

He faced recovering from the Great Depression for which he was falsely accused as being responsible. Many of his programs to get us out of the depression were implemented by Roosevelt. To this day, Hoover is maligned and Roosevelt is hailed as the savior of the United States from the depression. The latter's Great Deal is still costing us enormous amounts of money each year, in some cases for failed programs which just keep doling out money with little control from Washington.

Hoover was president in 1929, when the NY stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. His shortcomings were legion but his response to the cascading economic disaster - compounded by years' long drought (which he had no control over, of course) - was too little too late to do any good. The US and world economies did not fully recover until after WWII.

Hoover's attitude towards the poor. He was responsible for many Americans basically living in cardboard huts!

He was President when the Great Depression started. His handling of the situation did nothing to stop it. Shanty towns were call Hoovervilles in his memory.

The biggest problem was that many people could not earn enough money to pay for food, sheter, and medical expenses. People were starving to death in a land of plenty.
There were several causes of these problems.
