There are several reasons why people do that. 1. Age. Most women who kill are not women at all. These girls these days who are like 15 and having kids in secret (not even their families know they are pregnant) get scared and after the birth they dump them. Most of the time it is that they dont even feel the baby is a real thing or it is bec they are scared of getting caught. I dont know why they dont just bring them to the police dep or hospital or church. THey wouldnt get in trouble!!! 2. is Post pardom depresion. It is a real thing no matter what some celebrities say. There are many moms who feel like killing their children bec of the depresion, maybe bec they think the children will be better off or they hear voices. I dont think someone who is "NORMAL" ever kills their children. There is always somethnig behind it all as to why it happens.

Unfortunately, recent trends have shown that by claiming mental instability, you can essentially get away with some terrible things. Even if a mother doesn't keep that in the front of their mind as a motive, the idea is firmly implanted there. It's almost a hypochondriac sort of situation where one mother becomes "clinically depressed" and kills her kids and then all of the sudden other parents aren't feeling happy with their families. This isn't to say they are being copy-cat murderers, but still, if you see something in the news enough... it's bound to effect you.

I'm sure that murdering children has happened throughout history. It's just that we have the capabilities now to hear about these news events immediately, from anywhere in the world, so we tend to hear of it more frequently. Unfortunately, it's a sad fact of life.
Some do this heinous act due to their deluded mind state. You have excuses like, "God told me to do this, " or " If I can't have the kids, no one will!" Other reasons, like in China or India, have a system were their only "Social Security" is to have a son. A daughter is a hinderance and will be murdered in infantcy. I'm not saying that all those families practice this, but it is a known practice with some situations.
Of course, extreme anger can foster physical abuse, to the point of death. Regardless, none of it is justified. My heart goes out to those children that suffered through this and died. God help them.

As you say, you caught yourself in time. So did I, just as I was about to throw him across the room. Perhap, just perhaps, we were lucky.

It's the long term abusers that I think should go on the end of a rope. That is premeditated, and is something I could never imagine in the darkest part of my mind.

This might sound bad, BUT, i can see how people get SOO angry that they would want to shake a baby etc....The difference is doing it and not doing it though. I've been at a friends house and her kids been crying and i've been so tired and got really angry, but i just got up and picked the baby up to stop it from crying and i dunno after just holding him, i wasn't angry anymore.

Some people are so messed up or just get pushed and pushed that they snap. But normal people know how to control themselves. But there really is no justification for doing that sort of thing.

I have never been angry enough to actually think about even harming my child in any way at all. People must be really demented or sick to actually go through with that.
