More than the car is worth.

More then the car is worth unless your able to pull one from a scrap yard. But then the labour will cost a pretty penny as well. Call a few transmission shops and just ask how much to swap out a transmission.

To buy new or rebuilt, your looking at $600 - $1200.

The most expensive rebuild to do is a FWD automatic. My mom's '88 Plymouth Voyager minivan is a FWD automatic. It cost them around $1200 to get it rebuilt. You'll save alot by purchasing a tranny from a salvage yard and having it installed. If you go the route of the salvage yard make sure you go to one that will give you a 30day guarantee that it will work. ..and also take a mechanic friend with you because they can help you determine whether or not the transmission is worth buying...ie look for external defects that would prevent proper installation or operation. My dad and I have removed and replaced a tranny from a station wagon they have prior to the minivan. We did buy the tranny from a local salvage yard with the 30day guarantee. The tranny worked great as installed, no overhauls needed or anything. My dad and I did the work ourselves because we fix our own vehicles.
