No, my mother has a gay man who is her best friend outside my parents' marriage, and they've been married 39 years.
My dad jokingly complains that she talks to her friend more than she talks to my dad.
The other night I jokingly told my mom, "Mom, you're a faghag!" She's 59 years old and didn't even know what the term meant so I had to explain it to her. My mom's about as whitebread as they come.
Not to sound stereotypical, but I think straight women relate more on aesthetic issues with gay men than they do with straight men.
I can easily imagine it would prove easier to talk with a gay man about such issues than it would with a straight man, who, even if he has some interest in aesthetic issues, may feel constrained from freely discussing them by society's traditionally imposed gender roles.
Additionally, there's no element of sexual tension present so both the straight woman and the gay man feel at ease with one another.

Remember, a relationship like that of Will and Grace is a fictional one on TV, no realtionship would be quite like that. That said, my best friend is a gay man. I am a lesbian and I feel sooooo comfortable with him it is unbelievable. I know that I am safe with him. He will never look at me as a lesbian who exists to make straight men happy, he looks at me as a person, a true friend. Four years ago I was sexually assaulted by a straight man who was an acquaintance of a friend of mine. I had noone I felt comfortable enough to turn too. About three months later I met my gay male friend. We hit it off right away and over time he has rekindled my faith in the males of our society. A gay man is not a great friend to a straight woman simply because he is gay. You will need to find someone you are comfortable with, gay or straight. If the straight married woman you refer to wants a gay freind to simply say "I have a gay friend" that's wrong. If she wants someone to be comfortable with, then I have found that some of the nicest people I have ever met are gay men. Good luck!!

My straight married women friends always tell me that I am their best friend. I don't know that I believe them, but that is what they tell me.

I think it is wierd and a little ignorant that you ask that question. Gay men are way too cool for you.
