Always wash it on the 'delicate' cycle in COLD water and let it 'hang dry' ... the heat in the water and the heat in the dryer can both 'cause shrinkage' in 100% cotton. But you need to 'check the label' to find out if you can tell if what you are getting is 'natural cotton' that will shrink or 'pre-shrunk' cotton, which can be washed in warm/hot water and dried in the dryer.

Cold Water
Flat surface to dry - preferably a net or breathable surface otherwise it might smell musty.
Also, slightly pull the edges outward on the shirt, not enough to stretch it out, but enough to keep it the same size.

it isn't the washer that does the shrinking. it's the dryer.
wash as usual and hang to dry.
cold or warm water really makes no difference.

Hand wash it. It's the only way to keep anything from shrinking.
