Just smash into the boards. Nah try
this post. Start with one skate and place your foot lightly at a 45 degree angle to the way you are going and the ice will "scrape" lean into it a little so you get more weight over your "stopping" skate." Then do the same thing with both skates to stop faster

the hardest part of the hockey stop is maintaining the correct level of balance to ensure being able to stop while still staying upright. Odds are if you are not that great of a skater, doing a hockey stop will not come that easily. Basically you need to slowly, but surely turn sideways and lean back, pushing the blades of your skates sideways.

The biggest problem is balance during the stop. Most people try to lean to far back. Instead try to dig in with your outside skate and put weight on that.
A good way to practice is to skate towards the boards then do a stop close to it. If your balance is off you'll hit the boards. You know you have it down when you can stop without hitting the boards.

If you ask most hockey players, the answer you will most commonly get is to skate as fast as you can towards the boards and try to stop. After failing to do it right a few times, you will eventually teach yourself how to stop.

If you can't do a stop you should probably work on your skating before you try to play hockey.

If you downhill ski and know how to stop, then just do the same thing when you're skating.
