A Foreign Service officer is anyone working for the US Department of State who is hired/reclassified into the FS pay classification (as opposed, for example, to a Civil Service officer, who is classified in the GS system). Generally, they work in the US and overseas to promote US interests/foreign policy and to strengthen US/international financial, political, and military ties. They also serve to protect US citizens' rights in foreign countries.
