FIrst thing, if you put water in you may see the water leaking while the engine is on. If not you will see the engine light go on after a couple of miles driving and no water in the radiator. Sometimes, you hear a whirring sound of the water heater going bad. Just depends. If you continue to drive without water you engine will get HOT and lock up. Then you are in REAL trouble.

The reason to look for leaks while engine running is that you may have a hole in the radiator hose. One time I thought I had my water heater go bad. Water was dripping from it when I looked at it from underneath. I am a backyard mechanic and replaced it. I still had the waterleak. hahaha It was the f**king hose with a pinhole leaking toward the top, so when it got hot the hole directed the water over the water pump, which the water drained down, away from any hoses. Well I had to replace the waterpump anyway, (I guess).

Also if you hear a noise, like the whirring sound check the fluid in your power steering unit too. If it is low it will make a sound.

Either the bearings in the pump start to make noise the or the weep hole beneath the water pump starts to drip or spray antifreeze. You'll notice orange, yellow or green moisture in your garage or driveway or even your engine. Always keep an eye on your coolant recovery bottle under your hood. It's a reservoir that stores coolant. when your engine cools there is a small value in the center of your radiator cap that allows antifreeze / distilled water mix to be pulled by vacuum back into your cooling system. As your engine warms to full temperature there is a spring that actuates a one way valve that completely covers the neck of the radiator opening as you drive. When the pressure inside your cooling system reaches the posted number on the pressure cap the neck valve releases coolant back to the recovery bottle.

First, It will overheat. If it is cold, then you may not notice. But if there is any type of squeek or squeel coming from the engine, it could be the water pump grinding against the walls of the engine. That's bad. If it is leaking greenish-blue fluid, you need to get a new seal put on it.

If it's the bearing, you'll probably hear it, following by the dumping of your anti-freeze all over the ground, and then the overheating of your engine if you're not paying attention. I had a water pump go bad intermittently. It dumped out gallons of coolant. I refilled it and it was fine for another month, then dumped it again.

It will heat up if it's running low on water, maybe make a whining sound or you can move the shaft back and forth. Usually when they go out, there's a small weep hole by the pulley. Water will leak out of there when the bearing goes.

well,it would heat up,water pump would leak,or it would make a noise from the bearings.
