Thomas Jefferson answered your question in the Declaration of Independence. He begins by saying that we're going to declare independence, but that the world will want to know why.

He continues by laying out some ground rules for governments and the governed. "We hold these truths to be self-evident:" He then sets forth four such truths.

Next he sets forth one example after another of how "the present King of Great Britain" has abused the colonists physically, economically, militarily, politically, and personally.

He concludes that the colonies are and ought to be free.

Many reasons! The British were making them pay taxes to pay for the cost of defending them from the French, The Virginian farmers did not want Britain to ban slavery (which they did), and many thought it would give them more liberty (which it didn't realy) and the idea of gaining independence from a foriegn colonial government was very attractive - esp. at a time when Republicanism was very trendy with intellectuals. Jefferson - NOT Washington is the true hero of the Revolution! He was a man of great vision.

don't forget the single largest "part" of North america remained loyal - today we call it Canada!

Britain was oppressing them with taxes and not representing them in their government. They had all of the bad parts of being a British citizen, without any of the rights.
