just dont pay attention to previos answers..this one is from a real indian.

In one sentence " its a must fashion accessory for Indian women" not just for hindu women..

In the olden days every indian(when there were only hindus in India) including men used to wear a red dot made of a tree powder..it was the symbol of enlightenment..the uppermost "chakra"(yoga term) lies in between eye brows

Muslim women in India do not wear bindis..
The dots they wear now a days are syntheic stickers with little easy glue at bottom..a bunch for a dollar..during the recent decade they became available(modernized) in several colors.

In one sentence " its a fashion accessory for Indian women" not just for hindu women..

just for clarification...married women in India(very few in U.S.) still wear the read powder on fore head along with the sticker in between eye brows..

The dot means they're married; it's tattooed on.
