I was born and brought up in Germany where roads are gritted as soon as snow starts to fall. Some years ago, I can remember council workers digging snow off the roads with shovels so that cars could get to the station. I don't remember the year but this was a particularly bad year for snow. I have seen on the news that London Underground worked hard last night to keep the underground working but, if you cannot get to the station because the roads have not been gritted, then they are wasting their time.

Having been brought up in the American mid-west, where summers are much hotter and winters much colder, I'm used to snow. Brits, however, are not. Yes there are some gritters for major roads, but I'm used to lots of gritters and snow plows, which are quite rare in the UK.

It's simply a matter of being a rare condition for which the country is not prepared to deal with on a regular basis.

In the knowledge that it is going to happen, our local authorities like to talk about the plans they are making to avert any adverse effects. Sadly, by time they've stopped talking the snow is here and the plan is not fully formulated. Result: Lots of RTAs on the roads and insurance premiums go through the roof next year.

Because it doesn't snow that much in the UK so we are not prepared for it.

We don't get extremes of weather very often - either very hot or very cold.

Thats why its just as bad when we get a really hot heatwave - theres no air conditioning and people are expiring in their stuffy offices

c j davies - I'm in Mid Glamorgan and we're snowed in!!!

I know all the news snow everyone blah blah, I wake up this morning in Port Talbot, South Wales - no snow, just that it rained overnight. I think the year you are on about is 1982, my mum told me it was Janurary 1982 and she was pregnant with me.

They don't get much snow in England and when they do they aren't prepared. As little as 6 inches of snow can close a town. Pathetic
