You use a card reader to copy files to and from memory cards. Via the card reader, the computer can work with the memory card in the same way as with any removeable disk (CD, floppy disk, USB flash drive etc.).

Memory cards are used in digital cameras, some mobile phones, and more recently in other products like satellite navigation systems and the Nintendo Wii. In all cases there are reasons why you'd want to copy files between the card and a computer.

A card reader is a good way to download pictures from your camera because it's normally faster than using the camera's USB cable and doesn't consume the camera's battery power.

A USB Memory Card Reader is for faster transfers from your memory card to your computer. If you plugged let's say your camera directly into the computer it would take much longer to be able to access and modify the pictures that you have taken. Many memory card readers are universal which means that no matter what type of memory card you have you will be able to use the reader. This is especially helpful when you have several different cameras or media devices, so that one machine will be able to accept any type of media card you have.

you will find it handy if you have a digital camera with a card in it..it allows you to quickly view or copy files from the card to the computer for viewing and editing..often cameras will simply plug into the usb port for this purpose but the advantage MAY be that you want to have one person reading a card while you are taking pics with the camera, perhaps on another card.thus the reader is nessessary.memory size has increased and this is not always nessessary but other devices also use such cards..enjoy your new toy

SD cards are used for a variety of devices but the most typical use is for a digital camera. With a card reader attached to your computer you should be able to simply remove the SD card from your camera, insert it into your reader and retrieve whatever data, (i.e. photos) is on the card

Put your full card in it when you are out on a photographing session , it takes and holds the data. You then delete the photos you have taken so you can take more. Back home connect to your PC USB and download the data.
