My mother always used these terms as signs of approval, but I never quite caught what she meant. She was always telling me that one could not become a cultured or refined person by dint of education, that it was something different.

What, therefore, would you consider the mark of a cultured person..... or a person of refinement?

Thank You

A cultured person is one who knows how to behave in a group setting. A refined person is one who has the mannerism and taste of the bourgeois! lol.

Anyone that uses the word "culture" is a snob. It doesn't mean anything. It's the Emperor's new clothes. It's a way of elevating someone so they can be sycophantically adored. I've never done that with anyone and I never will.

Cultured as in plant, grown, matured.
Refined as in silver, removal of impurities or dirt.
Obviously outdated or what?
For as long as education equates the swallowing and regurgitation of non-experiencial 'facts' then no, it will not produce anything of the like.
Life may, given the correct environment.
