If you're seriously considering this, I'd start looking for a low mileage '96 now, putting it into long-term storage and then give it to the child. That'll save some money, since they'll probably increase in value over time and in the long run, you'll know what you have to give to the boy. (I wish I had grandparents that would give me a Corvette!).
I'd look for an automatic, with a/c and all the "normal" options as a fully-equipped 'Vette will be worth more than a "stripper".

Much simpler and cheaper just to give him a .357 magnum right now and tell him how to load it and where the bullets come out.
In the HIGHLY unlikely event that you're not asking this just to wind people up... Send him to a high-performance driving school for his 16th birthday. The Sports Car Club of America offers HPDE events, as do many other clubs in most parts of the country. I teach Teen Street Survival schools in the Northwest, and they're a lot of fun, but more important they give kids the opportunity to find out what happens at speed in a safe, controlled environment. We let them feel what happens when the tires break loose, when the car starts to slide, and when the steering goes away, and we do it all where the worst that'll happen is they'll mow down a row of orange traffic cones. But with some practice, they'll have a better chance of keeping it out of the trees if things go south in a hurry, as they tend to do with high-powered cars.

Well, I once heard an episode of ''Car Talk'' on NPR where a woman called in to ask if she should give her 16 year old daughter the BMW Z3 stick shift, or automatic, and the response of the guys on the show was "lady, DO NOT GIVE YOUR DAUGHTER SUCH A POWERFUL CAR!!!'' I would say the same to you sir. Maybe when he's a bit older, but I think too few people are responsible enough to drive a corvette at 18.

I'd say its not a bright idea but do what you want. I'm just tryin to give my advice so take it if you want and if not, oh well

No one under 28 should ever sit behind the wheel of a Corvette, a Z28 Camaro, the Pontiac Firebird or any other high speed, exotic car. Talk to any insurance agent and they will tell you these vehicles are the highest ranking items that kill teenagers and young adults. They are way to powerful to be in the hands of someone of that maturity and that lack of driving ability. Even grown men, 50+ have a hard time with the Corvette at times as it is a true driving car, not your every day Buick.
My stepmother did not listen to this advice from me, my Dad nor their insurance company. She bought my 18 yr old step brother a Pontiac Firebird with the Corvette package (engine/transmission). He has raced drag cars since he was 8 and currently does 300mph on the drag strip in top fuel dragsters. So her thinking....this car is nothing compared to what he does each weekend. Well a street car is nothing like a drag car, as one goes anywhere and the other goes only straight for 1/4 mile.
Well he got in trouble for doing 145mph past a stopped school bus that was picking up kids (they live in the country). He later got in trouble for blowing through a red light right in front of the State Highway patrol station. He has gotten in trouble for doing burn out patches at school and in friends parents garages. And back before Thanksgiving God finally took his toy away.
While coming home from a party, him and his 3 buddies were doing 120mph down the back roads. All egging him on to push it faster, they ramped it up to 155mph. At this point they crest a hill and realize a car is coming, touch of brake and BYE BYE BIRDIE. The car is out of control, zips across both lanes and bounces off the 1st guardrail. It then zips back across and plows deep into the mud and bounces off the 2nd guardrail. Now it going back across again but by now the front tire has blown out due to the speed, now the front passenger side rim grips the pavement and now they are in a tight barrel roll for over 17 rolls and over 1/2 mile. The car lands upright somehow, blowing out 2 of the 3 remaining tires, takes out guardrail no.2 again with the back end first, totally destroying the rail and the back half of the car. The car gets hooked to the rail and rides it down the street, still doing at least 100mph. Goes into a ravine, flips up and out of that taking out a mailbox and then to land in light woods to take out 8 small trees to slide back down into the ravine to take out a driveway hump and another mailbox which in turn made it barrel roll 3 more times ejecting the 2 back passengers and slamming them to the pavement. The car finally came to a rest about 50 yrs up the wooded hill.
Brother cracked his skull, busted ribs and punctured lung, passenger some how came out unscratched. Back two broke bones, collar bones, one is still in a halo (the metal device they bolt around your head).
They are lucky by the grace of God himself that they are even alive today, any of them. The State Highway Patrol even stated they have never seen such a high speed crash and anyone even come out in 1 piece, let alone alive. If you see the car, you can't even imagine 1 person could fit into that twisted mess.
If you love your Grandson, you'd never buy him such a toy that will only put him into the ground early. Would you want to be a paul bearer at his funeral?

no 18 year old should be aloud to have a corvette, that is a HUGE mistake, he'll wreck it, die or get seriously injured, especially because he didn't have to buy it himself, that car is way to dangerous for and 18 year old, there were so many kids in my high school whose parents gave them a brand new nice car that either got killed in it or badly wrecked, i'm 24 and me and my husband just bought a 2002 vette yesterday, we are being so careful with it, cops are addicted to them and everybody wants to race you at stop lights, you should really consider this before you make such a rash decision
