This is an easy question.
If you're young, and want to fit in with the "cool" kids, just be one of the sheep and vote for dead-head Democrats.
If you don't care what the College age and under crowd says, consider being a Republican.
If you don't want to always be on the wrong side of history, vote Republican. If you want to just whine and complain, but never make the effort to offer real, substantive solutions, vote Democratic.
Just remember what Winston Churchill said:
"If at 20 you're not a Liberal, you don't have a heart. But if at 40 you're not a Conservative, you don't have a brain".

People just classify themsleves as one or the other because it is easier. Our nation is one of a two party system. A person who doesn't closely follow politics can just pick their party instead of knowing everyone who is on the ballot. Although straight ticket voting is a problem it is a way people who have lives outside of politics can cast their opinion. You also forgot a moderate. The term is mostly just used by people who like to think of themselves as original thinkers.

Actually, no single objective advantage.
Unless you live in state with large primaries on one side,of which you join that side just to participate in that primary.
