I have an IBM thinkpad 600. My brother tried to use a USB to hook up his computer to mine. Now mine only beeps twice and does nothing, not even any messages on screen. Does this sound like a harddrive, or something else?

Sounds like something else - like fried memory. If it was the hard drive it would still boot and you would end up with a screen saying that the operating system could not be found.

I looked up the IBM HMM (hardware maintenance manual) for the ThinkPad 600, two short beeps indicates a fault with the system board. I would double check before making assumptions... but, if the system board (motherboard to most people) has a hardware problem then it's usually uneconomical to repair.
For most people the only option other than buying another laptop is find another ThinkPad 600 with a failed screen or another unrelated fault such as a hard drive and replace the failed board in the current system, ebay can be handy for a bargain sometimes.

Anyway, take a look at page 63 of the HMM here

This sounds more like a memory error. It may be possible, provided that it is, to reseat the computer's memory and you'd be able to boot on up normally. The notebook computer may have been bumped around during the time while you and your brother's computer were hooked up to each other. It is certainly possible that there may be other issues. I'm assuming that your brother was using some type of special USB cable to transfer files to and / or from your computer.
