Cold weather depletes your energy reserves, Muntaineers are very tempted to sleep in moments of great stress. You cannot sleep safely in the cold without a proper shelter.

Sleeping enables the body to replenish itself in various ways.

BUT, I have noticed people become drowsy from heat also.

I have experienced both of these myself.

I am not so clear about the heat, even though I have some medical experience. Maybe its the results of normal body mechanisms related to energy/heat production shutting down. Also you do not want to het hot and sweaty, so you are taking it easier, your heartbeat slows, also respirations, and then your body concludes: It must be time to sleep.

Yes, I think so. When your body gets too cold -- hypothermia -- everything is slowed down as well, especially heartbeats per minute and breathing.

So, maybe it is that slowing these is a trigger to sleeping.

Cold wears you out, heat slows you down. Good question, made me think.

Once I climbed down into the Grand Canyon -- to the CO River --and back, along the Blue Angel trail in the coolness of April, without any food.

On the way back I was very thirsty and noticed fuity breath (acetone) from burning fat reserves, having used up all more readily available energy (glucose in blood).

Made the bad mistake of not taking water, had to eat dirty snow on the way up. Mule piss, etc., ya know....

Fortunately not too much since it was early in the season.

Total distance is 18 miles, more than 4,000 up and down for sure. That was back in 1964 when I was younger and dumber. A real winner for loosing weight, though a bit drastic.

Went from 168 maybe more to about 138, but had traveled across USA, not feasting past few days. Obviously most loss was in Grand Canyon.

More gradual, daily exercise is far safer!!!!!

I'm not! I love to get out and enjoy it when the temp drops below zero F. Hot weather makes me feel lazy.
