Hey, my boyfriend whom I have been dating for 1 year and 3 months. His Mother (strict chinese culture) seems to beat him on certain occasions. I understand that it is Chinese culture, but I dont EVER agree with the beating of a Child because of playing hookey. I understand that his Mom never expected that from him, but i still dont understand. Do you think it was right of his mother to use the drape puller to beat him. I mean, isn't that illegal. Cause I dont care what counrty you come from, welcome to America, you use a tool to beat your child, you go to jail. Can yall help. Was it right, or am i being "over protective"?

Ummm, about 8 months ago, his mother took him to some sort of temple ritual. He was told to lay on a bed and have the bad "kee" beaten out of him for over an hour. He came back with bruised all over his body. Yea, just to let u know, was that right?

You're not over protective. His mother obviously has some problem. It's never right to do that to your child. Child beating is not common in China nowadays. Maybe still happened in the countryside. People in the cities mostly have only one child. Parents tend to give everything to their children.
I think your boyfriend's mother probably came from Hong Kong or Guangdong.

Girl, I was beaten many times by the belt, my father's hand and once a shoe. Today I am a young, thriving woman. There are two types of beatings. One are beatings that normal people give to their children when they are bad and should be nobody's business. The second beatings are the ones that leave the child abused. So you need to ask yourself is he being abused or are your feelings about children being beaten for misbehavior playing a major role in this. Think about it.

First question to you:How old is your boyfriend? As in many cultures, Chinese included, beating as punishment isn't seen as abuse, no matter how horrific it may appear to be. Many parents view beatings as a formidable punishment so first remember that your are about to step into someones home and reprimand them for their parenting. Secondly, what do you think happens when the authorities are called in a child abuse case? That they come and "talk" to the accused parent and everything is fixed? No, you are about to cause even more damage in your boyfriend's life than the beatings are causing. His mother will be sent to jail, fined and possibly lose custody of her children, ALL of them. Your boyfriend depending on his age will be sent into foster care, a ward of the state. You won't have a boyfriend anymore, as you will be the reason his life is disrupted. Why don't you first talk to your boyfriend and ask him how he feels about his "abuse" before you take it upon yourself to push your opinions into someone else's life. You are an outsider in the situation;it may be best to stay there.

that good that his mom beat him. In American, everything is desensitized and so politically correctly that common sense is often left out the door. Hit the kid, punish him. He will learn to respect that authority. What does making him sit on a chair for "time out" do to him?

Just see if he'll play hookey again now that his mom hit him. In China, it's ok for parents and teachers to hit their kids when they are mis/behaving. In fact, kids are made to respect the authority of their teachers. In society, teachers are second ranking in authority only next to their parents. Just look at how f'ed up American schools are these day.

When joining with another person from another culture --- it is the polite thing to teach the foreigner the rules and boundaries of the culture they have joined with. It is a difficult job but as with treating a child --- you need to be consitant and steadfast. So, in your story, you've got three kids to raise: His mom, him, and the baby.

Certainly, being an advocate for the baby who cannot defend themself should be priority.

This seems to be happening in China pretty often. At least the third time in a year I've seen footage like this. Awful. I don't care if it's your "culture". It's wrong. ://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3000534/Mother-beats-toddler-ground-continues-kick-lies-ground-Chinese-restaurant-knocked-parent-s-hamburger-floor.html

You are so right. You should ask permission of your Bfriend and ask him if you can report his mother. But he would probably report her if it was DEAD serious. I think that it is wise to go on the Dr. Phil show. He will help you, and make your Bfriend's mom go to jail and or give you half of everything she owns. Good luck!!

Doesn't seem like child abuse to me.

Hell, I was slapped everyday until I was taller than my mum so that I could defend myself! That doesn't sound that bad.

He probably deserved it. But, like it has already been asked, how old is he?
