Ferdinand Magellan was the first, Sir Francis Drake was the second.

The first man to attempt to sail around the world was Ferdinand Magellan. However, he died en route. Sir Francis Drake didk managed to sail right around the world. Therefore if you ask the question what man (explorer) was the first to sail around the world then you would have to say Drake. AND Christopher Columbus WAS NOT to discover North America--it has been proven that the Vikings were in North America long before C. C. In fact, there are some who believe that Irish monks under St. Brendan were in N. A. before the Vikings.

Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, was the first man to sail around the world. Francis Drake was the first Englishman. Christopher Colombus was the first European to discover America (unless you believe that the Vikings were there first).

Juan Sebastián Elcano who took over command after Magellan died. More correctly Elcano and 17 others of Magellan's original crew were the first men to circumnavigate the world.

Ferdinand Magellan was but he died on the journey but he was still accounted for it because his ship and crew made it around..

Any one of Magellan's crew who survived the voyage. Magellan himself was killed halfway through.
