here's the way I see it.
I was never considered gifted in school because in school I found it boring.
Now in my music classes I was considered talented....so it's unfair to label students, it makes others feel like crap and stupid.
Schools need to boost self esteems not break them down.

Well, according to my experience as student I would say "no, it's not unfair, it's perfectly fine", because even though I'm neither gifted nor so talented, I've always received compliments and acknowledgements from my teachers, having always been..let's say...salient in my classes compared with most of my classmates.
So in my case I could agree with the option of labeling students, after all everybody loves to be highly acknowledged for doing things right above others. But if we honestly talk about justice and being fair, well, it should be really bothersome for someone to see how somebody else is honored, while others are left behind.
So, in conclusion, I think everything should have measures and limits, you cant burst in compliments with some kid, leaving all the others behind all the time, if you do, try not to do it so often or publically, actually try to be kind and equalitary to all of them, and inspire them to be better.
PS The first user's answer is nonsense!!! I'm so far of being any of those things (talented or gifted) but I admire people who are, there's nothing wrong with it, as well as I could admire plain average people, what it's really worthy is someone's feelings and human quality. It doesnt matter if they are gifted or not, kids who are meant to be happy or good persons in their adult life, will be no matter what. It all depends on their human characteristics, whether they are good in science or not (just to set an example) will not determine it all.

It is kind of sad, especially when they have it in the Elementary schools. Though in my at my school they were somewhat bias, if you werent a cutsy girl or boy they wouldnt accept you no matter how smart you were. And it didnt really account for anything, the normal ones that were in GT ended up having the higher grades in high school so its not really an indicator. But yeah it is pretty much secluding some kids basically saying "No youre not allowed because youre stupid" kind of thing. Most of the people that were in gifted and talented in my grade have been arrested, dropped out, or just party all the time and didnt amount to anything

I don't like labeling anyone. The truth is though that kids need different things. The kid that can't read needs extra reading help. The kid who is bored in class because he already taught himself everything the teacher is teaching the class needs something more challenging. No gifted kids don't necessarily do better when they are adults.

I think its unfair to give all of the state aid to the special ed kids and take away from the "gifted and talented." The gifted and talented get cheated all of the time.

There are many opinions on the labelling of children. I think sometimes kids who learn at different speeds should be separated into different classrooms for best treatment but whenever possible the kids should never hear any such labelling.

you can usually spot the gifted and talented kids by their gifts and talents.
no, they don't necessarily grow up to be superbly adjusted adults.

There are lots of kids who get bored in the regular class room. Who's to say that some should be treated differently....I don't know.

Who/what determines a better life, or better outcome in the adult life? It all depends on who you ask and what standards they are being judged on.
