my point is how shallow the country is

America is one of the most generous countries on the face of the earth. I would not consider it shallow (democrats, on the other hand, are not a charitable as republicans or those that live in flyover country).

For your answer: It widely held that the tradition began in 1947 with President Truman. But, young Tad Lincoln save the live of the White House Turkey in 1863.
