If a King dies, the surviving spouse is called the Queen Mother. What will Prince Philip be called if Elizabeth dies before him and Charles ascends the throne?

If Philip outlives Queen Elizabeth, he will still be "His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh". The new monarch may, or may not, award him some further title.

When a King dies, his surviving spouse is only called the "Queen Mother" if she is the mother of the next monarch, and if she chooses to use that title. Edward VII's Queen Alexandra used it, but George V's Queen Mary didn't. When George VI's Queen Elizabeth became Queen Mother in 1952, Queen Mary became the Dowager Queen Mother, but she didn't choose to use that title either - she was always just Queen Mary.

The next prospective Queen Mother will be Prince William's bride, a long way in the future.

He would remain HRH The Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. The Queen Mother's title changed *only* because she had the same Christian name as the new Queen (and this did not allow her to outrank the sovereign, as someone said). There would be no such room for confusion if Charles became king. Queens Mary and Alexandra were not called Queen Mother after their husbands died, they just retained the title they had had since marriage.

He will be called His Royal Highness, Prince Philip. THAT'S IT. He will NOT be called "The King Father" ROFLMAO. A Title like "The King Father" is Given by the King himself, and Charles IS the King, the only King alive. His father, Prince Philip was never King.

Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother was called that because Queen Elizabeth II ALLOWED her to be called that. Her mother wanted to be called Queen 2x and was, "Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother." This way she could still outrank her daughter, lol.

However, Philip was never King. He will simply "retire" from public life.

Odds are that he will die first. The Windsor women always outlive their men!

Actually, the QM wasn't Queen Mother because she was the surviving spouse of the King, but rather because she was the Queen's Mother, herself the former Queen. Prince Philip will continue to be Prince Philip.

Prince Phillip

England would be great fools if they allowed Charles to be crown king of England. Charles has brought disgrace to England .. more times than you can count. Still say the "royal" family was behind the death of Di.. not the first time royals killed wives.

Had a lot of respect for the English.. not any more... if Charles is crowned... England you are doomed in many many ways.

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, (Philip Mountbatten; born Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark, 10 June 1921) is the husband and consort of Queen Elizabeth II.

Originally a Prince of Greece and Denmark, Prince Philip abandoned those titles to serve in the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom, but did not renounce them. In 1947, he married Princess Elizabeth, the heir to King George VI. Prince Philip is a member of the Danish Royal House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. Prior to his marriage, George VI created him Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich with the style of His Royal Highness. In 1957, Philip was created a Prince of the United Kingdom. Prince Philip took the anglicized name of his mother's family, Mountbatten (formerly Battenberg) after becoming a British citizen.

In addition to his royal duties, the Duke of Edinburgh is also the patron of many organizations, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the World Wide Fund for Nature, and he is a chancellor of both the University of Cambridge and University of Edinburgh. In particular, he has devoted himself to raising public awareness of the relationship of humanity with the environment since visiting the Southern Antarctic Islands in 1956, and has published and spoken widely for half a century on this subject.

The prince continues to fulfill his public duties as a member of the British Royal Family, and is an established public figure in the United Kingdom. He has gained something of a reputation for making "politically incorrect" and often controversial remarks, particularly when meeting the British public or on state visits to other countries.

I would guess he would continue unless the new King gives him another title

He would probably continue with the same title, unless whomever becomes King decides to change it. He could not become the King because it is not his bloodline that the crown continues in.

I would think His Royal Highness Prince Phillip. He would be referred to as a widower.
