If it untrue, you can send a cease and decist letter on your own, in a very formal manner to the President of the company. State that if this continues, you will be forced to pursue legal action.

However, Do not threaten if you are not prepared to do so.

If possible, the best way to deal with this is to not use that employer as a reference....remember that you can put the experience down on your resume without using it as a reference. However, should the future employer inquire as to why you do not want them to contact the previous employer, explain the reasons why you quit (remember you were not fired). The goal is to add to your credibility as an employee. As a prospective employer there are a few things to consider before making a decision to hire or not such as: how you present yourself - well spoken, tidy in appearance, knowledgeable about the position you are applying for, knowlegde about the company you are applying to, enthusiam, what you can offer the employer such as high output, bringing new ideas to the table, if you are prepared for the interview and the questions asked, etc; your work background, in particular how long you stay at a position (7 years is a considerable length of time), the experience you brought to the position and the experience you left with after being in that position (accomplishments - both work and personal gratifications from work); your future objectives - what you hope to be doing five years from now, if you might be taking any courses to improve your skills, etc; your past education; the industry you are in - trades, hospitality, business; the qualifications of your last employer; and other references - which should include personal but be sure to inform the perspective employer that they are personal. Be sure to let all references know of the type of job and places you have applied to and that someone may be contacting them..remember you want them to be prepared and not caught off guard.

Good luck with your job search!

Just a suggestion, but is there someone at your previous employment that you could give as a 'contact person' that could give you a good reference when a potential employer calls? Like an office manager, etc. It's not always necessary that the new employer speak directly with the employee but just someone that could verify your competence to the workplace.

If it is at all possible, I recommend losing the employer from your sheet of references. Possible switch to your day to day clients or other coworkers who will give you credit for your work.

It is not the best way to avoid the old employer, but it could keep your new professional contacts away from that poisonous employer.

Good luck in the hunt!

Don't list your previous employer. Lie about it if you have to. After all, he's lying about you. Just list the other jobs you've had where the employer doesn't lie about you.
