Why is it that the same people who want to erode the separation of church and state and make it illegal for same-sex couples to marry on the grounds that "It's a democracy and they have to listen to the majority", often say that politicians should not take the polls into consideration when making decisions or they are not strong leaders?

Not unconditionally. The leaders have both the authority & responsibility to use their best judgement.

Leaders owe it to their constituents to listen to all of them, regardless of whether they agree or not. They were elected to represent all of us and if the majority says its okay for same sex marriages, and our constitution doesn't prohibit it, then they have a sworn duty to ensure that the marriages are legal.

Here's a point to ponder. We are supposed to have religious freedom in this country. We are supposed to have freedom of association. Why is it that a veteran who has honorably served his country cannot have his religious symbol on his tombstone? Wiccan is his religon and he deserves to have his symbol on the tombstone if one cross or any other religious symbol is permitted on any other tombstone in the cemetary.

Here's another point to ponder. If Eve was made from Adam's rib, then we are all Gay aren't we? If women were given the pain of childbirth by God as pennance for eating from the tree of knowledge then Gay men and women who are childless or can't have children are actually the blessed, aren't they? We're all made from Adam therefore we're all the same sex and only we human holier than thous would attach any kind of stigma to the way another uses his/her body. God is the final judge and jury. We can just sit back and wait.

Your putting nonsensical words into our mouth. Whether the majority believed in the separation of church and state or not I'd still support it.
This is because I believe secularism is the way forward and religion the way backwards.

They don't have to, but they shouldn't expect their political careers to be very long if they don't.
