Such as grade5-8 in middle school?

Even having grade 6 in middle school has some drawbacks. The students still tend to be isolated from grades 7 and 8. Grade 5 definitely is not appropriate for middle school.

Personally I think they're too young.

I read recently (in the Boston Globe) that many school systems are trying to do away with separate middle schools all together - either do K-8 and 9-12, or K-6 and 7-12. It was an interesting article, and there are interesting arguments on all sides of the issue.

I do not think this will be a good idea. grade 5 is still too young. If you move them to middle school, in a few years people will start talking about moving grade 4 as well.

No way!!! My district keeps K-6 in elementary, 7-8 in middle. It's hard to have 6th grade in elementary but it's definintely for the best.

Well there are benefits to both sides, of either keeping it as it is, or moving it. If kept as it is now, obviously there would be no reorganizing problems, and also 5th graders would face less attacks from bigger 8th graders. It's not as bad for 6th graders because they are only 2 years apart, but some might argue that in high school there are grades that are 4 years apart. But seriously think about that. I go to high school, I know what its like. Everyone basically functions in their own group, and there isnt a whole lot of trouble among groups (notice I said "not a whole lot", not "there are no conflicts at all"). Kids in middle school are a LOT more immature OVERALL compared to high school kids. That's not to say there aren't lots of mature, responsible kids, or lots of immature kids in high schools, just overall. And if you go to middle school, you will probably disagree, but this is one of those things that you dont see until you're looking back. At least, it was for me. Anyways, with that said, having a big grade gap in middle school is not as good as it is in high school.

As for the benefits of moving 5th graders to middle schools, they would have a chance to become more mature and basically step up to the plate at a younger age. In elementary school, everything is spoon-fed to you. In middle school, it is the exact opposite (however when you compare middle to high schools, or high schools to colleges, etc. it always seems like they are spoon-feeding you). By making kids take more of the responsibility sooner, they are getting ready for high school/college sooner, and also will be more likely to be responsible people in the future. I dont mean responsible as in taking out the trash, or feeding the dogs, but basically being able to think for yourself. So when looked at this way, yes schools should move 5th grade to middle school. But what if it doesnt work out as planned? Then instead of the 5th graders becoming more responsible as a result of middle school, middle school will basically become an extra add-on the elementary where they can hold older kids. So finally, I think things should be kept the way they are. Kids are doing fine now (well, most of us are anyways), so something's gotta be right. And even if I did think it should change, it would probably cause a big hassle for the school board to figure out where the extra students would go. So that's my take on it. If anyone wants to comment, you can contact me anytime.

And for the person below me, I'm a sophomore in high school. When I was in 8th grade, I too thought of myself as "a big kid." But once you get to high school, you'll quickly see that every level is like that, and although I agree with your decision about not moving 5th grade to middle school, just be aware that just as the 5th graders annoy you, you annoy someone else, and the same applies for me and everyone else. And I dont mean they know you personally, but maybe they just find your grade or group annoying (as with 5th graders).
