Two great Texas natives that I would suggest are both in the genus Sophora. Both are small trees, so you could plant them near a patio or deck to enjoy. The first one is the best one, Texas Mountain Laurel, Sophora secundiflora. It has glossy evergreen leaves. The flowers are wisteria-like, but darker purple. Gorgeous. They smell great, too - like grape koolaid. I believe Texas Mountain Laurel will actually be in bloom for Valentine's Day in much of south Texas.
The other one is the Eve's Necklace tree, Sophora affinis. It has fragrant pink-and-white flowers. It is deciduous, but the fruits persist, and hang from the tree like a string of beads, hence the name, Eve's Necklace. It blooms in June.
Don't let pets and kids eat the fruit of these two trees. I believe they are poisonous, like those of many trees and shrubs.

I would plan a red bud. They always bloom in February and are beautiful.
