I have tried dish detergent and water. It seems that the soot has this greasy residue that even Dawn dish detergent won't cut. Anyone know a better way?

Use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. They work great on greasy soot. I sooted up a wall in my office and knew my boss would KILL me ir he saw it. I used the eraser and the boss never noticed where the soot had been.

try a little liquid soft scrub. Or some baking soda you need something a little abrasive.
