Please can you tell me how you fix a piece of plasterboard to brickwork. Does it then need plaster on it before it's painted? I know it's obvious that I'm totally inexperienced but it's only a piece 3feet by 2feet.

You can "dot and dab" it on. You will need some bonding plaster, mixed according to the instructions, then dot some on the back of the plasterboard and stick it to the brickwork (like glueing it on really!)
Plasterboard is double sided - one side to be plastered and the other to be decorated (check with DIY shop which is which), but if you are using it to patch existing plaster you would be better getting it skimmed over with plaster so that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

if the brickwork is not wet or dusty ..you can buy a tube of gripfil or silicone does it well apply dabs or blobs to back ..use whole tube .then push into position ..when set .24 hours ..use decorators caulk to seal and smooth edges ..then paint .. its important when you put board into place that it is not proud or lower than existing surfaces
