You need to add "pci=nomsi" to the kernel's boot sequence. There are threads about this problem with Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 1501 at the links below. There is even a blog about Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 1501.

I really can't explain why you aren't able to get past the options screen. I wonder whether you burned the CD at too fast a rate. You could try reburning another CD, but at a slower rate. i.e., 1x or 2x (or whatever the slowest speed is that's possible with your burning software.)

You do know that it's a bootable CD, don't you? This means that if you've burned it with a program that doesn't take this into account, you may have problems.

Also, you didn't say whether you'd burned a 32-bit or a 64-bit iso image. You must ensure that your laptop is capable of running the desired application.

One option that you may be interested in is that Ubuntu will actually provide you with a free CD of the required distribution.

If you go to the following page, you click on what you need. (I will tell you though, that the latest version that they ship is v6.06 LTS "Dapper Drake", which is not the latest version.)

If you click on the "I want to request free CDs of the older Ubuntu 6.06 LTS release" box, it will take you to another page where you are requested to sign up to a Launchpad account. The good news is, they don't even charge you postage, and you can request several copies of the CD. It doesn't take long to arrive either.

The full versions of UBUNTU run best with 256MB of RAM. If you have less, suggest you try XUBUNTU
