Below is a cut out of Yahoo news . It seems that Iran can and will defend itself. Will America attack any way ? I can't remember when (if ever) they have taken on a real power. I notice they leave China and Russia alone. Yes yes World war 2 but that was largely fought by the British Empire and won by the 25 million Russians who died fighting and that scared the pants off the US for 50 yrs or better thereafter .

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's top authority, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Thursday the Islamic Republic would target U.S. interests around the world if it came under attack over its disputed nuclear program.

His comments were accompanied by an Iranian naval commander's statement that the Revolutionary Guards had test fired missiles that could sink "big warships" in the Gulf, the waterway where a second U.S. aircraft carrier is now heading.

Good question.

After reading "Project for a New American Century"; after Khatami finished his term of office and the clerics disqualified reformists from running, and then when firebrand Ahmadinejad was elected, I did some independent research on Iran versus Iraq with the question of "could we?" in mind.

Here are the results:

Iraq (pre-invasion): 24 million people
Iran (today): between 80 and 90 million people
Iraq: size of California
Iran: size of Alaska (i.e. 3 times bigger)
Iraq: flat desert terrain
Iran: mountainous terrain (lots of hidy holes for would-be insurgents)
Iraq: no proxy groups or allies in other territories
Iran: Hezbollah and sympathizers/allies in Iraq and the Palestinian territories
Iraq: rag-tag army of about 40,000 conscripted soldiers, most of whom readily abandoned their posts at the mere whiff of possible defeat
Iran: 2 million-strong military with 20 million more of conscription age
Iraq: crippled by 12 years of international sanctions
Iran: buoyed by 10 years of record oil prices
Iraq: splintered
Iran: nationalistic.

At the end of the day, only a handful of crazy neocons and Likud Party members would advocate a ground war with Iran, and surgical air strikes would only serve to strengthen their resolve (plus I take their threats of retaliation very seriously and sure would not want to be anywhere in the region - more specifically in Lebanon - if the US decided to take the plunge).

What would I do if I were US President? I'd do nothing. Seriously. If Iran wants a nuclear weapon, they want it as a deterrent. They may be crazy, but they're not that crazy. And I'd tone down, if not cut out all together, the rhetoric. Making rude noises accomplishes nothing. Either put up or shut up.

there will always be a war with Bush as president, right now i would hope that the next president can get us out, you also do make a point with the whole leaving Russia and Iran alone but lets not leave North Korea out of the picture the problem is that oil isnt really found there and Bush is trying to get those oil reserves in Iraq as well if he does try to strike North Korea Congress wont allow it and will remove him now since we got dems in the house

It is saber rattling. It is like on the school yard when one kid starts smacking another a tiny bit and calling names just to provoke. Will Bush be provoked. Maybe he will but it will be the nail in the coffin of his political career and the great legacy he craves. The reason the insurgents do what they do and why Iran does what it does is BECAUSE WE ARE OVER THERE. Can I make it clear enough for you. They don't like us. They don't want us in their sacred land and if they came here you and I would feel the same way. If we get out and stay out they will be able to handle their own problems as they have for several thousand years.

They want to live in the 14th Century and I say let them. We need to put the billions wasted there into alternative energy and then tell them to take their oil and stuff it where the sun doesn't shine.

We could put our people to work in factories making the instruments and machines needed for alternative energy and we could sell it to our friends and business partners.

If we get out of there, freeze their bank accounts in the West and don't buy their oil they would be too busy trying to bargain camel for camel wife for wife etc as they did hundreds of years ago to bother us.

If a war with Iran erupted, it would last less than a day. Iran would be annihilated. The USA has weapons that have never been revealed to the would.
The defeat of Iran has become of more importance than you can imagine. It's over more than their ability to produce a few nuclear bombs. The very future of America may depend upon eliminating Iran.

Here is a question someone posted that looks at some historic snapshots and ties them into a sound debatable reason for the USA involvement in the middle-east.

If I had the time to dig in and seem, i'm specific that there is an editorial the place a president can postpone an election for the time of a time of grave national disaster. yet pondering the Iraq conflict is in the direction of the top of that is 5th 3 hundred and sixty 5 days and winding down, that hardly seems probably. particularly with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and the the remainder of the severe leftist liberals who could be there to offer up it.

Both sides are just trying to sound tough. With military operations going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is not in the best interest of the US to go to war with Iran, but if they did, Iran would not be able to keep the US from doing so. However, the 3000 deaths in Iraq would pale in comparison with the deaths that would be inflicted on US troops if we were to invade Iran. There will be no war with them anytime soon.

In my opinion,Bush will keep the war going as long as he can so he doesn't have to give up presidency. We all know that if there is a war, whichever president got us into it,has to get us out. Doesn't matter if they're president 20 years,if they don't get us out, they don't get out.. =[ So I think we're stuck with Bush for many more years to come.
