There is only 1 pass that can occur per play, but you can through the ball backwards which is called a lateral and this can occur as many times as a team wants in one play.

1 forward pass, and has to be behind the line of scrimmage. You can pass back as many times as you want, but if the player drops the ball it's a fumble

you can have only one forward pass, but as many backwards passes as you want. in the famous stanford cal game they lateralled (threw backwards passes) several times on the kick retun to end the game the ny jets also do super laterals, and sometimes the linemen get involved. it's said that they practice it every day.

There can only be ONE forward pass per offensive play.
However, theoretically, you could have an infinite number of backward passes/laterals.

^backwards OR parralel (though it's pretty risky, especially with cameras that can get a bird's eye's view and see whether it was a smidgen forward -----------however the "Music City Miracle" that got the titans into the playoffs actually had an illegal forward pass if you look from above...but w/e)
