Not only are they different companies, but they never were even owned by the same parent company.

As far as I know, DC comics is the older of the two. DC also has a much "higher powered" cast of characters like: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc. Meanwhile Marvel is more on the limited hero or super team side: Spider-Man, X-Men, The Avengers, etc.

Your friend could be thinking of Vertigo comics which is owned by DC now.

far from it.. they are rival companies... DC comics is not part of nor ever was a part of Marvel Comics they are the two "bigger" companies of comics and have done "crossovers" where their titles and story lines are a co-effort with each other..

DC comics started as National Periodicals, with Superman and Batman coming along... it was my understanding that DC was taken as the name after Detective comics became popular? not sure..... that was back in the 1930's? sometime....
DC's parent company is Warner Brothers.. also within that Warner Bro. is linked to aol, time-life

first comic of marvel? Marvel Comics... name of company at time Timely comics, I think.... it was late '30's....

Marvel was always considered the younger.. I do not know if it is true..but I used to hear the term "young upstarts" when refering to Marvel and "good ol' boys" when refering to DC... they both started in thirties... not sure of exact year, do think it was dc first though

No. But I see your friend's point.

But they are both American and are very similar on a global scale. Somebody with an ordinary life dresses up in a mask (or sometimes just takes their glasses off), and none of their friends or family recognizes them. Then, they fight crime, usually while wearing tights.

Basically, they're both most famous in the superhero genre.

(OK, some exceptions like the adaptations they occasionally do, but the original comics they have tend to be superheroes).

You compare this to other comics, such as the older Belgian Tintin, or the American Archie, and you see differences. There are cowboys like Lucky Luke, Historical, romance, adventure and a whole range of comics globally.

there are other ways the comics are similar. They are serial rather than albums (like most Belgian comics) and rather than strips, like newspaper comics.

So, as far as comics goes, DC and Marvel are two very similar companies. But separate.

Dc is a completely different entity or company from Marvel. Actually DC is the originators of comix mainstream. They were Action Comix, then became Detective COmix once they started the Batman line, and kept it such. Marvel was kinda in the running but where kinda disbanded.

No they are different DC has heroes like Batman, Superman and Catwoman and villains like Metallo, Doomsday and Braniac.
Marvel has heroes such as Spider-Man, Punisher and the X-Men and villains like Venom, Apocalypse and Loki.
Mind you there was a crossover series where marvel and DC characters met, Batman and Captain America fought, plus there have been references to each, e.g. Clarke Kent interviews Spider-Man in the DC world and the DC world started off the Scarlet Witchs insanity.

Separate companies, separate characters, separate story lines. Ever wonder why you don't see Spiderman and Batman together? This is why.

If he doesn't buy that, have him show you one comic from each brand. There should be a masthead somewhere in each, listing publisher, editors, etc. somewhere in there. It should also show the parent company and address.

different companies (rivals)

Your friend probably saw a "Marvel vs DC" crossover. They suck and they're not official, but they exist
