I'll be traveling to Pune, India for business in March. Will be there for about 3-4 weeks. I'm wanting to do the tourist thing while I'm there. Can anyone suggest places of interest? Temples? Shopping Centers? Museums?

Thanks!

Among the places of interest in Pune is Raja Kelkar Museum a one man collection of the maratha period, very interesting if you like history. The Aga Khan Palace, Saras Baug, Parvati Hill & sinhagad are some of the other places. Sinhagad is a fort atop a hill , you can take a car till the top & trek a little or go trekking till the top, on the way is NDA at khadakvasla.

Pune is famous for its bakeries among the best are Kayani Bakery famous for Shrewberry biscuits. You can also shop for good cotton salwar suits called Poona suits. Near the Osho ashram are vendors selling osho chappals on the road. There are also a no of malls like Kakade Mall, Central Nucelus where one can find almost anything. Have a great time but its going to be hot in March so avoid being outdoors in the afternoon.

And compared to Fodors or Lonely Planet-which only emphasize the Osho-ashram side of the city, here is a more comprehensive look.

Pune may still be considered a country cousin of Mumbai, but it is evolving into a metropolis in its own right.
If you care about history, then Pune has lots of historical places to visit.Once the adminstrative seat of the Maratha empire of the 18th century, it is also home to a lot of famous educational institutions from the British raj.
And of course, it is now also a thriving business destination with Knowledge industries and Auto sector.
And also, it is a very "young" and happening place with a vibrant youth populace.
