I use avast and think it is much better, you MUST only use one anti virus as they conflict with each other and cause problems

you should never use 2 antivirus products together!, Avast is better than AVG, in a recent survey it came out at number 1 and found 99.2% of virus that were tested.
I have used avast and it is very good but it can be slow. Another good free one is aol anti virus suite by Kaspersky. ensure you have a good firewall Zone alarm is the best and they do a free one. Also download anti spyware good one is lavasofte se personal edition and spybot search and destroy.
hope this helps

Yes; Avast will instantly detect that you have AVG installed and will switch off its resident monitors. I prefer Avast to AVG because AVG has let me down in the past but I'm sure the pro-AVG brigade will be out in force soon.

i must agree, avast is probally the best free anti-virus software avalible, far superior to a.v.g
in my experience i have found that avg throws up too many false positives, however its starting to look a bit better of late
but go for avast,much better

They probably will conflict yes, having two active anti-virus applications on your machine is a bad idea.
Anyway, Avast isn't just for a limited time period, you just register it (which is free) and it'll carry on running for a year, after which you can just register it for another year etc. Which they do explain on their site if you'd bothered to read it. Anyway, the page to register it is here:

You never want to install more than one virus scanner on your computer at the same time. Always remove one before you install the other.
If you download the free version of AVG it will not give you any kind of limited time or anything...it will just work.
