I am thinking of getting a new truck. I currently drive a Ford F150 4x4. I understand FWD, RWD, AWD, and 4WD (4x4), but am confused as to exactly what a 4x2 is.

4x2 is a rear wheel drive truck.

fwd is a front only transaxle
rwd has a ujoint at the tailshaft of the trans and goes straight to the rear axle
AWD is usually a modified FWD, you cannot shift from rear to four, or high to low
AWD IS NOT 4X4!!!!!

4X4 MUST have a Transfer case that shifts from rear wheel high gear to 4 wheel high gear to 4 wheel low gear.

AWD IS NOT 4X4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, a 4X2 is only 2 wheel drive (4 wheels by 2 wheel drive) a 4X4 is (4 wheels by 4 wheel drive) And then there is AWD (all wheel drive)

4X2 is 4 wheels, 2 of which are drive wheels. In a pickup truck those would be the rear wheels and it just means it isn't 4WD.

4x2 means the vehicle has four wheels, two of which are driven by the engine. 4x4 means the vehicle has 4 wheels, all driven by the engine.
