As a mother of two it comes with wisdom to realize that all babies are different. Smiling is a definate milestone but comes differently for every child. If there was something wrong your child would show more symptoms and your doctor would know. If you're concerned just ask, your doctor will be more than willing to help you, and trust me he's heard it all before.

6-8 weeks is when a baby develops a true social smile. It's going to happen in the next 2 weeks so don't worry. Now if you had a 4 month old who wasn't smiling, then it would be cause for concerns as it would be an indicator of a neurological problem.

I wouldn't worry yet - at 6 weeks, your baby still may not be able to smile socially. Any smiles at this age would likely be involuntary (probably due to gas, or otherwise a sign of contentment). Plus, some babies are just naturally more "smiley" than others.
Most babies don't smile socially until at least 4 to 6 weeks of age, if not longer. I'm sure (s)he'll start smiling any day, but until then don't worry - each baby develops at his/her own pace.

Yes, that's perfectly normal. Every baby does it at different times. I think most people think their baby smiles at an early age and it's just gas. So don't feel bad. If nothing happens in another month or so you can talk to your doctor. Your baby is just working hard becoming a little person. He'll smile when he's (she's) ready.

Yeah - it takes awhile. Be patient - it is worth it when it does happen! Remember - every baby develops differently. Your baby will be smiling and giggling before you know it! Try playing little games with your little one. My little guy smiling somewhere between 6 and 8 weeks. Now, at 5 months, he smiles everytime someone comes near him!

yes.....alot of babies don't give their first smile until around 8 weeks but it could also be even later than that. So stop worrying and enjoy your new bundle. and of course if you are still concerned bring it up with the doctor at their next well child check.

A baby's first proper social smile generally occurs at about four to six weeks, though it may be seen earlier and dismissed as wind. Psychologist Steve Biddulph says that, as newborns, boys tend to make less eye contact and to smile less than female babies. This means we have to be extra sure to interact and chatter with them, so that they grow to be toddlers who can talk as well as their girl peers.

Any time now. Mine was born on 14th November and smiled for the first time on 2nd January - his mum's birthday. He's been a smoothy ever since.

Yes, everything is fine, don't worry. Some babies take longer to smile, that's all. :)
