what if I'm doing a science fair project and my cup doesn't have any worms.

Should I use coffee grounds as a varible?

or should I just use fish food as a varible? How does fish food make a good fertilizer?

Just have one variable. If you have more than one (unless you keep them separate) you won't know which is causing what. As was mentioned coffee grounds are most beneficial at lowering the pH of the soil. Fish emulsion is and excellent fertilizer because fish are composed of the three macronutrients (N, P, and K) that plants need as well as most of the micronutrients.

You can have a control with no fish emulsion and then your test cups. You may want to vary the amount of emulsion you put in each cup to find the best amount for the best result.

Coffee grounds are not fertilizer. They can acidify (drop soil pH) which can improve nutrient uptake in some plants. They can also help build organic value in soil.
