I think some one lied to the liberals. My sister (a liberal) will conclude every argument with: "Well, it is supposed to be fair for everyone". Who's life is fair? Mine is not, never has been and never will be. I keep seeing posts from liberals on here about that's not fair etc. Could someone please explain, i am not trying to be smart-aleck, I just really don't understand.

Some good answers thus far, I understand equal protections etc. but what I don't understand is income redistribution theories, governmental involvement in things like health care, housing, desire for double taxation of corporations etc.

Foreclosures being a result of a disappearing middle class? I don't think so. The very high current rate of foreclosures are a result of liberal (not political liberal, but business liberal) mortgage lending, failure of people to be responsible and purchase houses they could afford, faliure of people to properly save money in 'emergency funds'. However, I do agree that the middle class in this country is disappearing, but is that the government's fault? Is it their business to rememdy that situation? Or is it the responsibility of people to be accountable for their fiscal decisions?

Life is not fair, never has been & never will be fair for all. But what is wrong with trying to even out the playing field to make it a lot more fair than it is now?
You can't possibly not see that the rich are getting richer & the middle class is slipping into poorness, fast.
One clue: look at the foreclosures in your city, look at the bankruptcies in your city. The inequities become larger every week & it is there for you to see. Read the job listings in your area, do you see a lot of jobs that are for factory work? For unskilled workers?
Because I see this & don't happen to like it, why does this allow you to label me. I could lable you too, but you wouldn't like the label I might choose for you.

I will start by saying it is a good idea for all groups to avoid gross generalizations such as "why do liberals do..." because not everyone in that group does the things you are referring to.

Personally it is not a matter of believing everything should be fair, that seems socialist or communist even. For example I believe that there is a responsibility to maintain a minimum quality of existance for each person who asks for it whether we agree with their life style or not. This is not "fairness" just humanitarianism.

I would venture to say that the people you are speaking to who cite "fairness" are simply unable to communicate what they are truly thinking due to lack of experience, frustration or what have you. They fall back on "fairness" because it is a generalized ideal that most people have at least some concept of making it easier to use than another word that might more acurately express how they are feeling.

For instance you could say it is unfair to make blanket statements about a group when you really mean "making blanket statements about a group generally indicates a close minded attitude toward the subject".

Well, I think there is a kind of confusion going on here. Of coarse, life is not fair. We all have different lives and experiences, some more blessed or more tragic than others. But I think when liberals talk about "life should be fair", I think what they really mean is that everyone should have access to a good education, good health, and a living wage of somekind to give them a chance to make something of their lives and put food on the table for their families. It's these life's basics that we believe all people (in our country at least) should have access to whether they are rich or poor, black, brown or white. We also believe this benefits all of society and keeps a healthy democracy. It's not a hand out, it's about keeping a healthy, happy society which in turn keeps a society less violent and more efficient.

Life's not fair, but we should all have the same opportunities for success. If you think we all do, then go to New Orleans some time and see how many people have been forgotten. Why should we spend billions re-building Iraq when our own people are in need? If everyone shared your beliefs, we would still be in the Great Depression.

I don't know how you can say you're not being a smart-aleck when you're broad brushing people, saying that all liberals have the same opinions as your sister. No offense but it's intellectually lazy to lump everyone into the same pot. You don't say how old your sister is but my guess is her views are based on a lack of maturity more than being a liberal.

According to our constitution all Americans are to be allowed equality (fairness) in our individual pursuits of happiness. The fact that things are not fair, only tells us we still have much work to do before we become a truly civilized society.

(1) I am a liberal
(2) Life is not fair

I feel that what many people mean by "fairness" is not to make arbitrary distinctions such as race, creed, color, religion etc. I think it is foolish to think that everyone, for example, is going to make the same amount of money. I know it sounds very Rawlsian.

we don't think that life should be fair, but we are hurt to see suffering and poverty in the world and believe that there is something we can do to change it. and if we can make life better, why would you give up this chance.

not to be mean, but i often wonder why conservatives only seem to care about themselves when running our nation. Our government is supposed to work to help the people, and i think that republicans are all too often working to help just the rich and elite, not all of america.

we do not need all of this wealth--we just need to see more people happy to wake up in the morning and live life.

Application of laws and the rights granted to citizens of a government is supposed to be equal. In the US, we aim to not have one set of rules for one group and another set for others. It's literally referred to as "equal application of the law."

Goes back to the whole "land owning, white, males" thing. They used to be the only ones who could vote or partake in the government. A system isn't a democracy if that's the case so as our country has matured, laws have changed to be sure to include all citizens. And there are still steps to be taken to continue to extend the laws equally.

I know its not all fair. I am more "liberal" than conservative, but Im more of a Boston wiseass than a milktoast.

The first two answers said it quite elloquently.
All of the "liberal" answers did.

Maybe its a matter of perspective. Sounds it.
