you can't really tell...unless, as has already been said, they can't play properly...and knowing the theory really doesn't have that much to do with playing...i can play guitar but i know absolutely no theory...i know about the guitars and I can figure out how to make the sound wanted, but other that i know nothing.

basically, it depends on how much you trust them. If you believe them, then they a guitar player. If they're lying, then there's a bit of an issue

oh, and if you've been playing for three years, you probably won't have a lot of calluses...your hands are callused cuz you aren't used to it yet. A guitar player who's been at it awhile generally won't have a bunch of calluses...some do, don't get me wrong. but their fingers are used to it.

hope that made some sense!

You can't judge a guitar player by calluses. When you first start out your calluses are very noticeable, but if you play every day for months and months on end, especially if you play an electric, your calluses (if you have any) won't be very noticeable. Best way to find out is to hand that person a guitar when they're not expecting it and ask them to play something for you. No guitarist is going to snub you if you put them on the spot like that -- it's a perfect invitation for them to show off. So if you do that and this guy tries to weasel out of it somehow, you'll know.

Those who can...do...those who can't...teach...and those who can't teach....teach gym.

(No disrespect intended for teachers).

I play the guitar everyday, however, my "calluses" don't show, because my skin has toughened to the point where you couldn't tell the difference between either hand.

But I would agree, the best way to tell if a guy can play guitar is to actually have him play something. For example, at that stage, he should be able to play a tablature ... or even a classic song like "Iron Man" or "Smoke on the Water".

So ask him to play something and then the "proof would be in the pudding" as they say.

Maybe that person has not been playing for a while so the calluses went away... Maybe their hand is rough enough so it doesn't get affected by the guitar playing... Maybe they use a very good hand cream... Can't you just ask how they keep their hands so smooth? Maybe you will learn how to soften your hands too!

The appearance of calluses goes away after a while.

Ask her to play something.

i think having calluses are the best way of telling. anyone who reads enough of one subject will be able to bluff their way thru into convincing anyone that he is good at something. but aside from the tell tale signs of an 'experienced' musician, like having calluses of your fingers, i can't think of any other way of determining whether he is telling the truth or not.

well, asking him to play is one thing but yes, some people who say they can play, play bad! just watch american idol - you know what i mean!

Well ask them to play something simple that you would learn in basic guitar lessons. If they cannot play that - then they cannot play.

Well of course having he/she play something is always the best way. I know people that are pros and suck, (i.e. George Thorogood ) but that's not the point is it ?
