A 70s tune from STEPPENWOLF

(Monster)
Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of kingdom and pope
Like good Christians, some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches

But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And 'til the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought our a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man

But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

The blue and grey they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war over
They stuffed it just like a hog

And though the past has it's share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But it's protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey

(Suicide)
The spirit was freedom and justice
And it's keepers seem generous and kind
It's leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin'

Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching

(America)
America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster

No, government dependence is a symptom of a much bigger problem: Constitutional ignorance and/or contempt on both sides of the aisle. Conservatives and liberals both ignore the first amendment. The former is constantly trying to pass laws that respect establishments of religion, and the latter goes too far the other way. Trying to stop a student from mentioning god in a graduation speech is an infringement of TWO first amendment rights: the right to freedom of speech and the freedom to express one's religion. Liberals have nothing but contempt for the second amendment, and the Federal Government as a whole seems to ignore the twelfth amendment ("The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people"). Republicans also defend suspending the writ of Habeas Corpus, which the Constitution EXPLICITLY prohibits. Finally, the problem you dressed, the general welfare clause, has been COMPLETELY blown out of proportion, when the founding fathers made it perfectly clear that it only applied to those powers that had previously been enumerated: "Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated" - Thomas Jefferson - "If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money and will promote the general welfare, the government is no longer a limited one possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one subject to particular exceptions" - James Madison - The federal government has been out of control for a LONG time. The founders were ingenious men, but they made one fatal flaw: they underestimated the threats posed by nationalism and faction. Once the people enshrine their government as something holy and great, as something beyond reprise, they give it free reign to trample their liberties. Once we become bitterly divided along party lines, we focus more on attacking one another than keeping the government in check. "Government is not reason, it is not eloquence — it is force! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action" - George Washington - "The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty" - George Washington -

A couple of things that come to mind are 1.) The media is controlled by a pentopoly of mega-corps. that are owned by right wing conservatives and as such, we are never given the whole story and 2.) The USA, and the free world for that matter, is controlled by an elite group of far right, self proclaimed neo-conservative reactionary statists who don't believe in the rule of law and don't think they have to tell the truth. They subscribe to "The Project for The New American Century" and have an agenda that has nothing to do with democracy and freedom. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Pearl are all members of this group. http://www.jonhs.net/911/ Go see for yourselves what you were not allowed to see in the mainstream media.

The breakdown of the family unit, since all the wenches wanted to get out there and WORK!

Well, they got their wish, the stress, the broken marriages, etc.

Kicking God out also served us poorly...

Nothing. 200 years ago, they said the same thing. 100 years ago, they said the same thing. 75 years ago, they said the same thing, 50 years ago they said the same thing, 20 years ago, they said the same thing, and we're still here.
