oh also any tips on creating faults? I usualy find it hard to come up with some faults for my charachters. some seem virtualy invincible, and that doesn't work with the plot line.

"One of the most important elements in a novel or short story is characterization: making the characters seem vivid, real, alive. One technique that many writers use with success is to create a character profile for the main characters in the novel. The purpose of a character profile is twofold: to assist the writer in creating a character that is as lifelike as possible and to help with continuity issues in the story"

Good for you for asking about this! So many people seem to be concentrating on "what happens" they forget that the characters are the heart of the story! Here's a sheet I've used a few times to work on building up a character - there are others out there, but this is a good basic one to get you thinking!

When I wrote stories myself, I used the personalities of people I knew. It seemed easier if I patterned my characters after real-life people; its easier if you have a pre-determined template to guess what one would do in a situation than to try to make up an entire personality yourself. There tends to be inconsistencies in character or all the characters start acting the same (because they all have your own personality) if you try to make up a complete personality by yourself.

So to get character components I would start paying attention to those around you and how they act. Try to get into their mind, to understand why they act that way. Does this one have a philosophical bent, or that one overly religious, does that one have a mind for strategy or is this one focused on how to attain and maintain popularity? With this it will become much easier to see how your own characters might act in a situation.

Know what your character wants in terms of the story and what strengths will aid in getting that as well as weaknesses that will form obstacles.

Look at the character traits of people you know and characters in the books you need. Are they funny, brave, sneaky?
