I've heard yea and nay. There's a pretty good biography on him by a New York Times contributing writer who knows Castro about as well as anyone outside can, Tad Szulc. Given that before the insurgency situation got off the ground in Cuba they were, as a group, in Mexico. Really, that's where they trained while not appearing to.

The American dollar goes further in Mexico so I imagine when things got a little lean it'd be dirt simple for somebody to blend into the crowd over the border and do a little extra work it was called, back then and a box lunch.

The restrictions weren't all that tight back then. Whatever you got you could take back with you and exchange for Mexican pesos. Not unlikely. Getting ethnic types generally in Hollywood I imagine was a big problem for Hollywood back then if needed.

If you had a passable bone structure and were a white guy a little make up could help you pass for an African chief as was done in the original 1933 ' King Kong '. That guy was a white guy. He did a pretty fair job.

So, yes. The possibility is there and I'm sure with today's scholarship and research confirmation shouldn't be long in appearing. Hope this helps.
