if its too low, then it will shift hard,or slip.but if it down a little,it wont hurt it,but its best to top it off to the full mark, cause if its gets too low,it can burn the oil and ruin the valve body.

Check your owners manual for the section on transmission and they should have a diagram of where the dipstick is. You can remove the dipstick to check the condition and level of the tranmission fluid. If it is low you will possibly notice some hesitation in between shifts but more often than not, you will only notice something major by the time it is too late. My suggestion is, if you are not auto mechanically inclined, take it in and have it inspected if you suspect you are having some issues. It will cost you about $150 to have it drained and replace, which is better than $1500 for a new transmission.

Of course you can tell. That's what the dipstick under the hood is for. Check it - with the car running. By the time the car starts showing symptoms of being out of fluid it is usually too late to just add some and drive away. You will probably have permanent transmission damage by then.

Best way to tell is to allow your transmission to warm up, then with the car on a level surface and in park, but idling, pull out the dip stick and read the level.

You are probably referring to an automatic transmission, so the way to check it is to pull the dip stick and check it. Don't wait to have symptoms as this will be too late.
