It depends on what you want it to do?
ipod (hard drive)
Nano (flash memory and no moving parts)
Shuffle (flash memory and does what is says on the tin)
I would stay clear of an ipod(hard drive/moving parts) as the hard drive always plays up. In a year I had mine replaced 3 times under warranty, also the battery life is rubbish. I now own a 8gb nano as it has no moving parts, ie no hard drive and the battery life is great. Remember the higher the gb the more songs it can hold.

First of all the shuffle it comes with 512mb or 1gb of memory. The shuffle doesnt have a screen unlike the others they cost between £50-£80. The next is the nano they are available in various colours. The nano comes in 3 the sizes of hard drive memory 1gb 2gb or 4gb they cost between £90-£150 and finally theres the full ipod they again come in different sizes of memory from 20gb to 80gb prices start from £160-£400 some of the ipods also have colour screens and video playback. Apart from the shuffle they all are hard drive jukeboxes.

I have an i-pod nano, which has lasted me a year so far and its been quite good.
The i-pod shuffle is a lot cheaper than other i-pods and very small (it doesn't have a screen). Its ideal for just clipping on and going for a jog, exercise etc or for long journeys.
If you're more bothered about what it looks like then try the i-pod nano! The new ones come in different colours, like pink and green.
The original nanos are black or white.
All the original i-pods store a lot more songs and are generally better but admittedly don't look as good.
Also don't worry too much about getting the latest model, it'll only be overtaken by a new one in a few months!
Hope that helped :]

Aside from the specific capacity of the IPOD, there are different technologies in play. The smaller IPODS (I believe up to 8G) use flash memory as the storage mechanism (which means no moving parts). No moving parts mean less to break, and longer battery life. The 20G + players are all hard disk based. They have a mini hard drive that spins at high speed.
From a cost prospective, the 2G nano cost just slightly less than the 30G ipod video (200 as compared to about 240).
Which brings the next difference. With the larger capacity, you are capable of storing and playing video

iPod shuffle - compact, small and comes in a large variety of colours. Holds 1GB (240 songs).
iPod nano - I've got one of these and it hasn't disappointed me. It now comes in a range of colours, and holds 2GB, 4GB or 8GB of songs. The battery life isn't at all bad, but apparently gets worse after use.
iPod - The big, chunky, flat one which doubles up as a mirror, holds a whopping 30GB or 80GB (20,000 songs). The only one that carries videos out of the enitre iPod family. Comes only in black and white.
I would buy the iPod nano, because it has the colour screen of an iPod, and the outer colour variety of a Shuffle. And, it's not too pricey at all.
Or, save your money completely and save up for a Creative Zen Vision, which you can watch videos, store photos and listen to music and the battery life won't fade.

iPod shuffle comes in 5 colors, has no screen, and is the smallest iPod. They have 1GB and are $79
iPod Nano comes in 6 colors and holds pictures and music (no video or games). It's very thin and comes in 2GB (silver, $150), 4GB (silver, red, blue, pink, green $200), and 8GB (black, red $250).
iPod is the biggest and by far the best. It has pictures, video, music, and games. It comes in 2 colors and either 30GB ($250) or 80 GB ($350)

The more you pay the longer you have it before it breaks down. Do yourself a favour and avoid ipods. You are paying for a name only and just look at how many HELP questions appear on here because they break dow. Get yourself a Creative Zen
