This question cannot be answered by looking at the mlb as a whole. You have to divide it into AL and NL. There is no way I will accept the answer of Pujols being the best player in baseball until he plays a full year in the AL. How can one judge he is the best player in the MLB, when he faces much weaker pitching.
Granted he is a talented player, very talented, but put Manny, Jeter, Arod, or Thome, in the national league, and I think we would see similar if not better numbers of them.
You want to see the best of last year. I would have to say the best player in baseball is Jermaine Dye. Batted .315 with 44 homers 120 RBI solid all around the board.

Derek Jeter is the best all around baseball player with Berkman, Vlad, Pujols, and of course A-rod rounding out the top five. All five are great hitters, fielders --some in multiple positions--, and leaders. I had to give it to Jeter because he's got the experience, the rings!

Albert Pujols -- hands down
at this rate he will finish his career with 917 HR's, that says enough, and he's only in his fifth year
In a close second I will have to take my absolute favorite player, Derek Jeter. C'mon, the guy has a career .317 batting average, 196 hits per year, .463 career slugging, 116 runs per year, he plays almost every game (151 per year).
He has a career fielding percentage of .975 and now has two gold gloves. And hes the captain of the YANKEES, that can't be an easy job.
Did I mention he's lead the yankees to 4 world series rings???

LOL! Nobody said Alex Rodriguez, who, at the age of 31, has over 460 HRS 2,000 hits, 1,300 RBI's 200 steals, and 1,350 runs scored. This guy hits .290 with 35HRS and 121 RBI's and 113 runs and he had a BAD year?

He's driven in 100 runs in 9 straight years, hit 35 or more HR's in 9 straight years, scored 100 runs in 11 straight years, been an All-star 11 staright years. He's won 2 gold gloves, an MVP and a batting title but nobody mentions him as being the best player?
UNREAL!

LOL @ Derrick Lee. This guy has ONE flair up season then misses 12 weeks with an injury and he's the best player in baseball? LOL! Give me a break.

Albert Pujols and it is not even close. This guy is a MONSTER !! His first five years in the league have been nothing short of phenomenal. Pujols can do it all. He hits for power and average, and very rarely strikes out. He even steals bases. His nickname is the MACHINE. Do I need to say anymore. He plays a solid defense and has already played three different positions in his first five years.

Soriano has an all around game. Everyone knows about the homeruns and the stolen bases, but what people don't realize is that he led the league in assist last year from the outfield.
