USA - Lincoln's Gettysburg address, and the Civil War. The united states was about to split apart, and in effect it did. Lincoln ended slavery, and directly into a conflict between the North and the South that killed more Americans than every war since then combined. The country was brought back together, reconstructed, and became prosperous.
