Competitive Cheerleading: Yes, hours of dedication and hard work go into it, and all for the outcome of a panel of judges picking a winner in each division.
School Cheerleading: No, unless they compete but that falls into the category above. All they do is pretend to be cheerleaders but are the most pathetic excuse I have ever seen.

Personally I am not a fan of cheerleading. If it were up to me it is not a sport, but since it is not up to me to decide than technically it is one. With all the work and practice that it takes to preform the way they do it is a sport. Any group activity that is preformed physically is a sport. They do compete and have tournaments just the same. Things like dance, gymnastics, karate are all sports. So yes it is a sport.

competitive cheerleading is a sport. In competition you go against six to ten other teams. Unless you can tumble, jump, and throw someone heavier then you in to the air over and over again don't say cheer isn't a sport. six months of practice for three minutes to win over the judges, and if one person messes up we lose first place.

My wife used to coach cheerleading for a middle school she taught at. Yes, it's a sport. ccgraves should watch a cheer competition on ESPN2 sometime and see the winners and losers.

Some people think it is and others do not. I don't think cheerleading would be counted as a sport.

Technically no, since there is no winners or losers, but you definately have to be an excellent athlete to be a cheerleader.
