i now reside in austin, texas but originally am from san francisco. i'm not sure if people here have an identity crisis or what, but i've heard several comparisons by people here who think this town is identical to cities in california. however, when i ask if they've lived there they say no. the pace of life is so incredibly slow here it's like watching life pass you by. i'm constantly passing people up and being told to slow down. this is conservative stickville usa. if you've been to either place or both, your thoughts?

I'm a native Californian and I've been to Austin many times because that's my company headquarters. It is NOTHING like cities in California. Nothing in Texas can possibly be like anything in CA.

They probably think that way because it's the most open-minded city in Texas that has the most outsiders passing through. California has a culture of tolerance, where you're only normal if you're weird, and it gets exposed to many ideas from all over the world. Of all the cities in Texas, Austin is the most like that, but that's not saying much. So yeah, they're deluded with this self-image.

Just smile and nod.

i live in san diego but i just had the opportunity to drive across the country a few months ago... and YES i know exactly what you mean... everything in the middle of the country is SLOW!!!... before this trip i was actually contemplating on moving away from the city, once i saw the lifestyle i decided it wasn't for me. I'm actually thinking of moving to a larger city...new york, mexico city, or somewhere to that effect because i could not possibly be happy in a place where all you do is sit there and watch life pass you by!
