I personally think that ANYONE in the lime light - regardless of their job - can be a poor role model.
Take Terrell Owens for example. He's filthy rich and acts like a spoiled brat. Or Kobe Bryant; filthy rich and a philandering, adulterous rapist. Barry Bonds? Filthy rich and using STEROIDS to try to be great. Reggie Bush? Took bribes to be filthy rich. The list of dirty athletes is FAR longer than good ones... L.T. excepted.
Celebrities are just as bad, if not worse. Look at ALL of these "super stars" (they're only in this position because they have ridiculous amounts of money and out doing outlandish things!)...they go around and tell our kids its ok to screw whom they want, wear what they want, do what they want, drink what they want, and generally be complete degenerates.
The BEST role models should be the parents! However, even this isn't foolproof, because there are some SERIOUSLY f'ed up parents in the world!
Moral of the story: there IS no "perfect" role model, but celebrities and athletes aren't it.

role model yes ... perfect, depends on how you look at it
Role model refers to a person who fills his or her role as a good or bad example for others. And athletes provide many good and bad examples, both of which we can learn from. But perfection is not something often found.
lets take Kobe bryant for example (and I will say that I dont like him) ... as a skilled basketball player he is amazing, and he is a very good role model for athletic ability and skills on the court.
But after the media insident in colorado hes not much of a social role model. He had sex outside of his marrage, and he was extorted. BTW, he wasnt even charged with rape, the girl involved changed her story and the DA dropped the case. And look at what people still think about him, it doesnt seem to matter to anyone what really happened, just what they hear. kinda like the lacross players at duke.
so kobe could be a perfect example of how to act on the court, and how not to act off the court ... but the way the media puts these people under the microscope ... well ... nobodys that perfect

There can't be a "perfect" role model. People's likes and interests vary as well as abilities. Someone who isn't very athletic or that into sports probably isn't going to turn to an athlete for inspiration.
The perfect role model is one who's character inspires, not necessarily just their profession. I'm inspired by Mohamed Ali, not because he was a boxer, but because of his character. Simply being talented at a sport isn't enough.

No athletes are not perfect role models. Some are severe jack a**es. Some also do drugs and believe they are invincible. Also jocks only have friends b/c their jocks. Not b/c they'll help their friends thru hard times or do the right thing. They also often only get good grades so they can stay in sports and not for their own benefit.

If you mean professional athletes, No because in any case power and money has a nack of changing people... those who remain the same are the true role models. However, there are few who fit in this category. And there is no such thing as "perfect"

I think we should stop focusing on people that are perfect "physically" and start looking for role models not based on that but who they are on the inside. You cannot buy integrity. You can buy fame and hundreds of friends for a dinner party but it's all an illusion. One false mood and society turns and eats you alive. It's what you do then that defines wno you are and wether or not yor a good role model.

They may be good role models for athleticism, health, and for a specific sport. As for any other area - and even for the aforementioned - it's completely up to the individiual.
Are they good role models just because they play sports or because they're rich and/or famous? Of course not.

I don't believe there's a such thing. we have many role models but perfect, NOT !! We have good and bad in everything, just look at our presidents pasts...Nixon=Watergate, Clinton=Monica...and as far as the athletes, well how many have caught AIDS, been busted cheating, swearing, and all the other too many to mention no-no's...

Not with the corruption reported in the news.
I don't have time for sports nuts and care less than less for the games.
